The Glasgow University Surgical Society (GUSS) is a student runorganisation, established in 2005 by senior medical students. The key aim of GUSS is to promote surgery and its sub-specialties as career options to members and to this end the committee organises regular lectures and seminars delivered by senior surgeons on different aspects of surgery
We are not exclusively for aspiring surgeons and organise a series of revision lectures tailored towards all final year students. GUSS hopes to encourage mentorship and guidance from senior surgeons and following each talk we provide ‘cheese and wine’, providing the opportunity for closer discussion with the speaker.
We are fortunate to have the support of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG) who facilitate our surgical skills sessions at the RCPSG premises. The sessions are run by registrars and senior house officers who kindly volunteer to teach suturing, knot-tying and laparoscopic techniques.
For the first time in 2009 GUSS embarked on organising the first Undergraduate Surgical Conference, combining surgical skills sessions and talks from highly regarded consultant lecturers. The conference is open to all undergraduates and FY1s in the in the UK and it welcomes abstracts for poster presentations on ANY surgical topic.
